FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Date: December 17, 2010 Time: 11:55 a.m.
This morning at about 5:49 a.m., State Troopers were dispatch to a fatal crash on Highway 115 approximately 13 miles north of Florence. Troopers have been able to determine that a 2001 Nissan Sentra was southbound on Highway 115 when it entered a right-hand curve and lost control. The Nissan entered the opposing lane of traffic and was struck by a northbound Ford F-250.
The driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is not being released at this hour pending notification of family.
The driver of the pickup was transported to a hospital in Canon City with minor to moderate injuries.
Alcohol is not considered to have been a factor in the crash. While the investigation is ongoing, the driver's speed relative to the conditions is believed to be the leading contributing factor. There was light to moderate snow at the time and the highway was icy and snow-packed.
Additional details will be released as they become available.
